Level of the LncRNA UFC1 is increased in hepatic carcinoma (HCC) tissues compared with controls, and associated with tumor size, barcelona clinic liver cancer stage, and patient outcomes. Transgenic expression of the UFC1 in HCC cells promotes their proliferation and cell-cycle progression and inhibits apoptosis. Moreover, UFC1 interacts directly with the messenger RNA (mRNA) to stabilize protein HuR (encoded by ELAVL1) to increase levels of β-catenin (encoded by CTNNB1) mRNA and protein. However, there is a negative correlation between level of microRNA 34a and UFC1 in HCC tissues; microRNA 34a can reduce the stability of UFC1 (1).
